Sentiment was mixed during the Asian session. While dovish Fedspeak was
supportive, rising investor concern about China’s growth weighed on sentiment.
The FOMC’s Raphael Bostic, a neutral voter, said that while risks to inflation have
come down, threats to the labour market have risen and his sentiment was
supported by FOMC voting dove Adriana Kugler. The Fed’s rotation away from
focusing on controlling inflation to supporting employment was reaffirmed by their
rhetoric. Alternate neutral voter on the FOMC, Susan Collins, said rate cuts should
be careful and data-based. The China-stimulus induced rally continues to fade with
HK and Mainland stocks trading in the red. Data for the Golden Week holiday
period shows higher levels of domestic tourism, but lower spending by these
tourists. At the time of writing, bourses outside of HK and Mainland China were
trading in the green, however. S&P 500 futures were trading in the red. A dovish
50bp rate cut by the RBNZ led to the NZD being the underperformer in G10 FX
during the Asian session. Soft investor sentiment led to the USD, CHF and JPY
outperforming.
